Scott Wagner: “If Someone Kills One Of Our Children, We Will Kill Them.”

Introducing Legislation Imposing Mandatory Death Sentence For School Shooters

In a speech to the Pennsylvania Press Club today, 2018 gubernatorial candidate Scott Wagner announced that he is introducing legislation that would impose a mandatory death sentence as the penalty for any school shooting that results in a fatality of any person on school grounds.

“Let me make the message crystal clear, if someone kills one of our children, we will kill them,” said Scott Wagner. “We have failed our children, their parents, their siblings and survivors too often. As Governor, I will not fail them. But if a tragedy like the one in Florida happened here in Pennsylvania, Governor Tom Wolf would fail our families. Almost immediately after he took office, Tom Wolf put a moratorium on the death penalty. That means that Tom Wolf would protect the life of someone like Nikolas Cruz despite the fact that he ended the lives of 17 innocent students and faculty. Tom Wolf would prioritize the life of an evil school shooter over the lives of innocent children. When I’m governor, I will remove Tom Wolf’s moratorium on the death penalty on day one. I’m running for Governor because children, parents and hard-working Pennsylvanians need someone on their side – and I will be that leader.”

During his speech Wagner also proposed additional initiatives to enhance school safety. Wagner’s proposals include bolstering state funding for mental health, placing a highly trained, armed security officer in every school building in the Commonwealth and investing in school safe programs.

Wagner’s remarks as prepared for delivery can be found below.

Good afternoon, everyone.

I want to thank Jan for that kind introduction.

I also want to thank the PA Press Club — and its members — for the opportunity to speak with you today.

I just wish it was under better circumstances.

Folks, we have a crisis in America today.

The tragic shooting that happened in Florida recently should be a wake up call to everyone.

We protect our money.

We protect our airports.

We protect our politicians.

But we don’t protect our children.

As a husband and father, I found the images coming out of Florida shocking.

As I watched the families who were devastated that they would never get to hold their loved ones again…

…I couldn’t help but think that it could have happened here in Pennsylvania.

In York.

In Philadelphia.

In Lancaster.

In the North Hills of Pittsburgh.

In Millcreek.

In Dallastown.

It could happen anywhere.

To hear the pain in the voices of the survivors is shattering, sobering and infuriating.

To see the government’s failure to protect our children is astounding.

To imagine that this kind of tragedy and failure, could happen right here in Pennsylvania is unfathomable.

It’s high time that we have a Government – and a Governor …

…who is willing to stop all the talking and do something about violence in our schools.

We don’t need any more opportunism, special interest talking points, or more gun laws …that would neither have prevented this tragedy or any of the prior tragedies.

We need a government that stops sticking it to the people it’s supposed to protect.

We need a leader, not another politician.

And we need action.

I will be that leader as Governor, and I will take action.

So here is what I am going to do:

I will make investments in mental health.

We need to make sure that those who suffer from mental health issues get the attention they need so they are not a danger to themselves and others.

I will move to increase mandatory minimum sentences for any crime committed with a gun…

…and I will not allow liberal courts to put violent criminals back on the street before they’ve done their time.

I believe we should have a highly trained, armed security officer in every school building in the commonwealth.

In addition, each and every school building in the state of Pennsylvania will undergo a high-level security assessment.

As Governor, I will make dollars available for safe school initiatives.

People may ask, “how can we pay for this?” And my answer is simple… how can we not?

It is critical that we provide the safety and security our children need and deserve in our schools.

A government that has 208 regulations on the use of a ladder…and can fund tax credits for horse racing and Hollywood… can certainly find the money we need to protect our children.

Lastly, I have a very bold message for any coward who is deranged enough to consider attacking our children at school:

When I am governor… these cowards will pay the ultimate price.

Today, I am introducing legislation in the Senate, which would make the penalty for any school shooting…that results in the death of a child…or any other person on school grounds…

a mandatory death sentence.

No plea bargains.

No life sentences.

No mercy.

Let me make the message crystal clear.

If someone kills one of our children, we will kill them.

We have failed our children, their parents, their siblings — and survivors too often.

As Governor, I will not fail them.

But if a tragedy like this happened here in Pennsylvania, Governor Tom Wolf would fail these families.
Almost immediately after he took office, Tom Wolf put a moratorium on the death penalty…

…which means there is no death penalty in Pennsylvania folks.

It means that Tom Wolf would protect the life of someone like Nikolas Cruz…
…despite the fact that he ended the lives of 17 innocent students and faculty.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Tom Wolf would prioritize the life of an evil school shooter over the lives of innocent children…

…over those who grieve for them, and over those who sought to protect them.

If ever we needed an example of where the system is failing us…

…we need to look no further…

than our GUTLESS GOVERNOR, Tom Wolf.

Tom Wolf’s moratorium on the death penalty puts the interests of criminals, and left-wing special interests, ahead of the safety of our children, and the people of Pennsylvania.

When I’m governor, I will remove Tom Wolf’s moratorium on the death penalty on day one.

Where is Tom Wolf on this issue?

He only has the left’s talking points on gun control which would not have prevented the Florida massacre.

On this issue and so many others, he is with the big-dollar special interests that fund his campaign.

Governor Wolf has lined up lock, stock, and barrel with the liberal left.

Tom Wolf used an executive order to unionize nursing homes…
…putting senior care at risk…as employees haggle over benefits for themselves, rather than the residents.

Tom Wolf has opposed important education reforms, and he’s spending more money on education in name only.

The truth is that  of the new education money goes to pension payments…

…and to pay off the special interest groups who fund Tom Wolf’s campaign.

It does not go to the classroom, or to the students.

Tom Wolf has attempted to tax everything and everyone under the sun…

…he wants more money for more big government programs that really only help his donors.

Rather than grow the energy economy here in Pennsylvania…

…Tom Wolf has decided that it is more important to choke the industry with a tax being pushed by his special interest donors.

Rather than go head-on against the Opioid-heroin crisis from day one…

…Governor Wolf only decided to call a state of emergency when it became a campaign crisis.

Folks, here’s the truth…

Tom Wolf has picked his side…

…and he…is with them.

I am with you.

It’s time we have a governor who puts party politics aside…

…and does the right thing for Pennsylvania all the time.

Look folks, our government is broken.

A lot of politicians came before me who could have fixed it but did not.

I will.

It’s time we take out the trash in Harrisburg.

Folks, I’m running for Governor because children, parents and hard-working Pennsylvanians need someone on their side…

On this issue…every issue.

In November…

…we’re gonna start taking out the trash in PA…

…and that begins with Tom Wolf.

Thank you.
